How to Get Your Loved One Into a Luxury Treatment Center

How do you get someone to go to recovery?

As you may already know, addiction and mental health are complicated, and it isn’t as simple as asking nicely or sternly. There’s a balance of making clear your love for them and their well-being alongside holding them accountable for their actions toward themselves and others. Here are a few things to consider that can help you figure out that balance, making your communication with your loved one precise and productive for everyone involved.

  • Take time to learn about addiction and how it affects the individual and everyone around them.
  • Consider the right time and place for confronting them, likely somewhere comfortable, private, and sober.
  • Speak with compassion, using “I” statements to avoid an accusing tone.
  • Offer help and assistance in finding the right treatment for them to overcome their problem.
  • Be patient and understand that they may not be ready to commit to any sort of treatment.
  • Set clear boundaries to hold them accountable for their actions and communicate them respectfully.
  • Plan an intervention with everyone directly involved in your loved one’s life if confronting them isn’t enough or possible. Professional intervention services are available.

What is a professional interventionist?

A professional interventionist is someone trained and experienced in the planning and performing of interventions on behalf of families concerned with their loved ones struggling with addiction or mental health disorders. They are involved throughout the entire process of helping transition your loved one into the right treatment program for their recovery.

A key benefit of hiring a professional interventionist is that they are an objective third party outside of much of the confusion or clouded judgment that can come with family dynamics. This allows for not only the addict but also the family members and friends to be held accountable for any potential enabling or unhelpful family roles that may be working against recovery in the situation.

What are the levels of care for addiction recovery?

Levels of care in recovery refer to the different stages in a recovery program’s process. Each stage focuses on different needs, typically beginning at a higher degree and intensity of care to a lower level that offers more liberties while maintaining the effectiveness of treatment.

Detox

Properly called detoxification, detox is the first step in the recovery process in which the individual is monitored during the withdrawal phase as the substance is released from the body. This can be dangerous, depending on the context, which requires medical supervision in the case of life-threatening circumstances.

Inpatient / Residential Treatment

During the residential stage of recovery, the individual lives in a facility and receives 24/7 treatment, which may include clinical and holistic treatments and therapies.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

The PHP level of care offers flexibility in treatment scheduling while allowing the individual to live at home during the recovery process. Treatments or therapies will take place throughout the day while the individual returns home at night.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

The IOP level of care allows for further flexibility. Treatments and therapies are offered a few times throughout the week; otherwise, the individual is home, free to work, etc.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient care is the least intensive, where the individual attends therapy sessions on a less frequent basis.

Extended Care

Some recovery centers offer extended care to individuals who need more time to develop their recovery skills via individual and group therapy, support groups, and life skills training sessions.

Transitional Living

Also known as sober living, transitional living offers an environment for individuals to live in a sober environment for a period of time as they transition from their recovery program to independent living.

Aftercare

Also referred to as alumni programs at recovery centers, aftercare provides ongoing therapy and support groups for graduates of recovery programs to maintain social connections in a sober environment and help prevent relapse.

What are the most common mental health disorders that occur with substance abuse?

It is often the case that various mental health disorders accompany drug and alcohol addiction, also known as dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders.

Some of the most common co-occurring mental health disorders include:

Given the reality of co-occurring disorders, it’s important that your loved one exhibiting such receive treatment that accounts for both their addiction and their mental health.
