“Too many people wait until they are exhausted or depressed to make change or seek help. Mental health isn’t something to put on the back burner. We can’t keep good habits in storage until we need them. Mental hygiene takes practice and repetition. It should be as ingrained in our daily routine as dental hygiene. – Adam G.”
Did you know?
BrainsWay Deep TMS ™ can complement medication, incorporating personalized exposure therapy that activates associated brain structures for stimulation.
Safety and Efficacy of BrainsWay Deep TMS in Alleviating Depression Symptoms has Repeatedly Been Demonstrated in Sham-Controlled Clinical Studies and Real Clinical Usage:
- Treatment targets neuronal pathways related to control of motivation, reward, and pleasure—specifically the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC).
- In real clinical practice settings, the majority of treatment-resistant depression patients have benefitted from Deep TMS.
- Among patients who completed 30 treatment sessions, nearly 3 in 4 achieved clinical response and nearly 1 in 2 achieved remission.

How Does BrainsWay Deep TMS Work?
BrainsWay Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Deep TMS) is a noninvasive treatment that uses electromagnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain associated with mental health symptoms. The treatment uses BrainsWay’s patented H-Coil technology, which is built into a cushioned helmet placed over the patient’s head. The technology is designed to reach deeper and broader brain structures than traditional TMS approaches.
During treatment, the electromagnetic pulses help influence neural activity in targeted areas of the brain. The goal is to help regulate brain activity associated with conditions such as major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Deep TMS does not require surgery, anesthesia, or sedation, allowing patients to remain awake and alert throughout the procedure.
What Can You Expect During a Deep TMS Session?
Before treatment begins, a trained provider positions the Deep TMS helmet and determines the appropriate treatment settings. The initial session may include a mapping process to identify the appropriate treatment location and stimulation level. Once the device is properly positioned, the treatment delivers controlled electromagnetic pulses to the targeted brain regions.
During a session, you may hear a tapping or knocking sound and feel a repetitive tapping sensation around the treatment area. Sessions are generally about 20 minutes, although the exact treatment schedule and duration can vary depending on the condition being treated and the protocol recommended by your provider. Because Deep TMS is noninvasive, patients typically remain awake throughout treatment and can generally return to their normal routine afterward.
Potential Benefits of BrainsWay Deep TMS
For individuals who have not experienced sufficient improvement from previous treatment approaches, Deep TMS may provide another option to discuss with a qualified mental health professional. BrainsWay Deep TMS is designed to stimulate targeted brain structures without requiring surgery or anesthesia, and it can be incorporated into a broader mental health treatment plan.
Deep TMS may also be used alongside other forms of care, including psychotherapy and medication, when determined appropriate by a healthcare provider. Treatment plans are individualized, and the number of sessions needed can vary based on the condition being treated and the individual’s response to therapy.
Who May Benefit From Deep TMS?
BrainsWay Deep TMS may be considered for individuals who continue to experience significant symptoms despite previous treatment. A qualified provider can review your mental health history, previous treatments, current symptoms, medications, and overall health to determine whether Deep TMS may be an appropriate option.
Deep TMS is not intended to replace every form of mental health treatment. Instead, it can be incorporated into a comprehensive treatment plan when clinically appropriate. Your provider can explain the potential benefits, limitations, and alternatives before treatment begins.
Deep TMS May Be Considered When:
- Symptoms have not improved enough with previous treatment
- Additional support is needed alongside psychotherapy or medication
- A noninvasive treatment option is being considered
- The individual is appropriate for the specific FDA-cleared treatment protocol
- A provider determines that Deep TMS fits the person's overall treatment plan
What Conditions Can Deep TMS Treat?
BrainsWay Deep TMS has FDA-cleared indications for certain mental health conditions, including major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The appropriate protocol depends on the condition being treated and the individual’s clinical circumstances.
Because Deep TMS is a specialized treatment, patients should receive an evaluation before beginning therapy. This allows the provider to determine whether the treatment is appropriate and whether additional forms of care should be incorporated.
Is Deep TMS Safe?
Deep TMS is a noninvasive treatment, meaning that it does not require surgery or general anesthesia. Patients remain awake during treatment and can communicate with the treatment team throughout the session.
As with any medical treatment, Deep TMS can have potential side effects. Some people may experience discomfort or sensitivity around the treatment area, headache, or scalp discomfort during or after a session. Your provider will review potential risks and safety considerations before treatment begins.
Deep TMS as Part of Comprehensive Care
Mental health treatment is most effective when it addresses the individual rather than focusing on a single symptom. At Fountain Hills Recovery, Deep TMS can be considered alongside other therapeutic and clinical services when appropriate.
Psychotherapy can help individuals understand thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and life experiences, while neuromodulation may provide another treatment modality for specific conditions. Medication management may also be incorporated when clinically appropriate.
The combination of services is determined based on each person’s needs rather than using the same treatment plan for everyone.
Deep TMS and Addiction Recovery
Substance use and mental health concerns can sometimes occur together. When someone is experiencing both, addressing co-occurring mental health symptoms can be an important part of a comprehensive recovery plan.
Deep TMS should not be presented as a standalone cure for addiction. Instead, when clinically appropriate, it may be incorporated into a broader treatment program that includes counseling, behavioral therapies, recovery support, and other evidence-based services.
The treatment team can evaluate the individual’s needs and determine which combination of services may be appropriate.
How Many Deep TMS Sessions Are Needed?
The number and frequency of Deep TMS sessions depend on the condition being treated and the specific treatment protocol recommended by the provider. Many treatment protocols involve multiple sessions over several weeks rather than a single appointment.
Consistency can be important when completing a TMS treatment course. Your provider will explain the recommended schedule, expected treatment duration, and what to expect as you progress through the treatment plan.
What Happens Before Your First Treatment?
Before beginning Deep TMS, your provider will conduct an evaluation to determine whether the treatment is appropriate. This may include reviewing your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, medications, and treatment goals.
The provider will also discuss the procedure with you and answer questions about what you may experience during treatment. If Deep TMS is determined to be appropriate, the treatment team will establish the settings and protocol based on your individual circumstances.
